Dear Future Mentor,

Think back to a difficult time in your life. What helped you through it? Chances are it was really “who” got you through. Think about what a difference that person made. Are you ready to be that person for someone else?

Research shows that youth who spend time with a caring adult mentor regularly for at least one year are:
5X more likely to graduate (Youth Dropout Prevention Summit 2008)
46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs
27% less likely to start drinking
52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school
More trusting of their parents or guardians (Making a Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brothers Big Sisters 1995)

As Americorps volunteers at the school this year, Brystle and Kelly are developing a mentoring program to re-connect students at the High School. The goal of the program is to reduce the likelihood for juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, and school drop-out, while increasing academic success, raising aspirations for higher learning, and developing positive relationships.

While we are continuing to make every effort to make positive connections for these youth, the success of this program will require the support of the community. Being a volunteer mentor gives you a sense of personal accomplishment, value, and recognition. When people connect themselves to the greater community and give back, it strengthens the core of that community, bringing people together to affect positive change for everyone. The CREW seeks to bring caring people like yourself together in a partnership with youth.
